What Is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Colonic hydrotherapy, also called colon cleansing, flushes the colon with warm filtered water. It attracts strong opinions in both directions, and this page tries to be plain about what it is, what a session involves, and who should leave it alone.

What Happens in a Session

A trained colon hydrotherapist runs the session while you lie on a table. Warm water enters through a small tube, waste leaves through a separate line, and the cycle repeats over roughly 45 minutes. Around 60 litres passes through in total, though not at once. It is a closed system, so there is no odour and no mess.

Most people describe pressure and fullness that comes and goes rather than pain. The therapist stays with you and adjusts throughout, and you can stop at any point.

What People Notice

• Feeling lighter and less bloated, often the same day
• More regular bowel habits over the following week
• Less abdominal discomfort where constipation was the driver

What we would not tell you is that it removes toxins, boosts your immune system or resets your metabolism. Those claims get made about this therapy constantly and the evidence does not support them. Your liver and kidneys handle clearance, continuously, and they do not need flushing.

Who Should Not Have It

This matters more than the benefits list. Colonic hydrotherapy is not appropriate if you have:

• Active inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's and ulcerative colitis
• Diverticulitis, or a history of bowel perforation
• Severe haemorrhoids or rectal bleeding that has not been assessed
• Recent bowel or abdominal surgery
• Serious heart or kidney disease
• Pregnancy

Rectal bleeding, a persistent change in bowel habit or unintended weight loss need proper medical assessment first. Those are symptoms that deserve a diagnosis, not a session, and we will say so.

Where It Fits
