A large share of the people who work nights are the ones everyone else depends on: nurses, paramedics, police, firefighters, long-haul drivers, warehouse and factory staff, air crew. If you are one of them you have almost certainly seen a headline saying night work causes cancer, and you have probably never seen anyone explain what that actually means.
It is worth doing properly, because the honest version is neither "this is fine" nor "you are in danger".
The authoritative source is the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the arm of the World Health Organization that reviews exactly this kind of question. IARC assessed night shift work in 2007 and looked again in June 2019, publishing the full review as Monograph Volume 124. Both times it landed in the same place.
Night shift work is classified as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans.
The basis, in IARC's own terms: limited evidence of cancer in humans, specifically for cancers of the breast, prostate, colon and rectum; sufficient evidence of cancer in experimental animals; and strong mechanistic evidence. "Limited" is a technical term rather than a polite hedge. It means a positive association has been observed, and chance, bias and confounding could not confidently be ruled out.
This is where most reporting goes wrong. The IARC groups describe how confident we are that something can cause cancer, not how much it raises your risk. A weak carcinogen that has been studied exhaustively can sit in a higher group than a strong one barely looked at.
Group 2A also contains red meat, very hot drinks above about 65C, and working as a hairdresser. Group 1, the sufficient-evidence tier, is where tobacco, asbestos, alcohol and processed meat sit. Knowing night work is in 2A rather than 1 tells you something real. It does not tell you the size of the risk to you.
The mechanism is the best-established part, and it is not mysterious. Working nights means being awake and lit when your body expects darkness. Light at night suppresses melatonin, which is the timing signal for the whole circadian system. Circadian disruption in turn affects DNA repair timing, cell division cycles, immune surveillance and hormone rhythms, all of which are plausible routes to cancer risk across decades.
Animal evidence supports that fairly strongly. Human epidemiology is much harder, because "shift work" covers everything from two nights a month to twenty years of permanent nights, and studies that lump those together produce muddy answers. That is exactly the problem that sank the meta-analysis this page used to cite.
Most people reading this cannot simply change jobs, and telling them to is useless advice. These are the things actually within reach.
If you work nights and feel wrecked, that is worth looking at, and it is usually about sleep, blood sugar, thyroid and stress hormones rather than anything exotic. A cortisol rhythm collected across the day occasionally tells us something useful in shift workers specifically, because the shape of the curve is the point rather than any single value. Adrenal and stress assessment and nutrition support are where most of the practical work happens.
What we would not do is sell you a supplement to offset a cancer risk. Nothing on our shelves does that, nobody's does, and anyone suggesting otherwise is worth walking away from. Melatonin gets discussed on exactly this reasoning, and evidence that supplementing it changes cancer outcomes does not exist. It helps some people sleep, which is a different and much more modest claim.
