Kava is a plant from the South Pacific. People use it in drinks and as a supplement. It is often used to help with anxiety.

What is kava?

Kava is a member of the pepper family. People in the Pacific have used it for thousands of years. Today, you can find it in drinks at kava bars. It is also sold as a supplement in the United States.

What are the benefits of kava?

Kava may help with anxiety. You might need to take it for several weeks to feel a change. It does not seem to help with generalized anxiety disorder. There is not enough proof that it helps with other health issues.

What are the safety risks?

Kava is linked to rare cases of liver injury. Some cases were very serious or fatal. This can happen even with kava drinks made with water.

The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold. You should know that kava is not regulated like a drug.

What are the side effects of kava?

Kava can cause stomach upset, headaches, and dizziness. Long-term use of high doses can cause a skin condition called kava dermopathy. This makes your skin dry, scaly, and flaky. It may also turn your skin, hair, and nails yellow.

Who should not take kava?

Do not take kava if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It contains substances that may be harmful. Talk to your doctor if you take any other medicines. They can check for harmful interactions.

Does kava interact with medicines?
