Pomegranate: Benefits, Side Effects and Safety

Scientific name: Punica granatum Also called: Pomegranate

Pomegranate is a fruit-bearing tree from the Middle East. People use it as food and in traditional medicine. Today, it is sold as a supplement for many health conditions.

What is pomegranate?

Pomegranate comes from a small tree. It grows in the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and parts of the United States. People have used it for a long time to treat diarrhea and sore throats.

It is used in many ways. You can eat it, apply it to your skin, or use it as a mouthwash. It is now sold as a supplement for heart disease and diabetes.

What are the benefits of pomegranate?

Research on pomegranate is still in the early stages. Most studies use juice instead of supplements.

Pomegranate may help lower blood pressure, but we need more research to be sure. It may also lower blood sugar levels by a small amount. Studies on cholesterol have not shown clear results yet.

What are the side effects of pomegranate?

Pomegranate juice is thought to be safe. Some people may have digestive issues after using it. There are also reports of allergic reactions to pomegranate.

Be careful with the root, stem, and peel. These parts contain substances that can be harmful in large amounts.

What is the dosage for pomegranate?

There is no standard dose for pomegranate. Talk to your doctor to see what amount is right for you.

Is pomegranate regulated by the FDA?

Dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA before they are sold. Manufacturers must ensure their products are safe and labeled correctly. The FDA can take action if a safety concern arises.

Who should not take pomegranate?

Pomegranate juice may be safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. We do not know if other parts of the plant are safe to use during these times.

Always talk to your doctor before using any herbal product. This is especially important if you take other medicines.
